Utilities & Smart Grid

The ever-increasing demand for electric power not only requires more generating capacity but more efficient use of the electricity that is available for consumers today. To accomplish this goal utility companies are turning to ‘smart grid meters’ which can measure, monitor, collect and analyze how electricity is being used in the home or the industrial workspace. Many Smart grid meters offer additional capabilities like remote connect/disconnect of power or tamper detection circuitry.

Standex-Meder Electronics is supplying state of the art technology to help achieve these Smart Metering goals. Applications include reed switch based sensors that indirectly detect whether the remote connect/ disconnect system has functioned properly. A reed switch sensor is typically part of a feedback loop that sends a signal to the Utility’s control center confirming that the meter has executed its commands correctly. There is no room for error when electricity is involved.

Power Magnetics

Standex-Meder power magnetics such as current transformers, split core current transformers, and Rogowski coils are used to help determine KWH usage and high demand in electrical smart metering systems, in homes as well as in large commercial and industrial facilities. Highly accurate Standex-Meder current transformers can solve this problem. Current in the monitored circuit produces a reduced but proportional current in the Standex-Meder current transformer, which is then monitored by the measuring instrumentation. Multi-tenant properties can also use this technology to bill tenants for individually measured electricity usage through the use of multiple CTs and a single measuring instrument.

Sensor Solutions

Most households and businesses have meters reading and recording the volume of water used, the volume of gas used and/or the amount of electricity being used. Most of these meters used Standex-Meder sensor solutions such as reed sensors to count and measure the usage for each household. This is done in a power efficient and tamper proof way using reed sensors. When the reed reed sensors senses the revolution, it sends a signal back to the electronics which is duly recorded using an electronic counter. In this way the exact volume used is accurately recorded along with accurate recordings of the amount of kilowatt hours of electricity used. Meter readers can then come by or have the usage information sent to them wirelessly. Then of course, the dreaded part for the user occurs where the bill is formulated and sent to the customer.
