Standex Electronics Announces New RF Reed Relays – Part 2

Excellent RF switching components for continuous wave RF and Digital RF

Cincinnati, OH – September 30, 2013 — Standex Electronics, a manufacturer of precise, reliable, and long-lasting miniature switches, sensors and relays, announces their new RF reed relays. Reed relays have the ability to switch and carry RF signals and fast digital pulses. Several key component parameters must be understood in order to properly design an RF circuit using reed relays. To learn more about RF reed relays go to Digi-Key Corporation’s Product Training Module.

RF use to be used in radio transmitters and receivers, radar tracking systems, and other test equipment to supports these applications. Today it is used in all cellular telephones. RF systems are coupled with fast digital pulse usage. These pulses run the digital world and may require the same circuitry that carries RF signals. They are used in computers, laptops, digital components in cellphones, digital phone systems, integrated circuit testers, and more.

RF is dependent on the physical layout or signal path it takes while going through circuits and the components that make up those circuits. For best RF performance the characteristic impedance must be consistent along the entire path signal. So at any given point, at the entry, thru the reed relay, and exiting the relay, the characteristic impedance must be maintained at 50 Ohms. The physical layout of a reed relay has a direct bearing on the RF signal’s success going into and out of the reed relay. The materials making up the reed relay are also important.

Standex Electronics reed relays represent excellent RF switching components both for continuous wave RF and digital RF pulses. The reed relay RF design is most dependent on its geometric and the material makeup. Careful design and material selection is critical. Designers using the RF reed relays must match the impedance entering and exiting the relay. Maintaining pure 50 Ohms impedance on the PCB, through the reed relay, and back onto the PCB is critical to maintain the RF path.
