How do you calculate the characteristic impedance?

The characteristic impedance is calculated by the formula:  Z  = √(R + (XL – Xc)2 ) where Z is the characteristic impedance, R is the DC resistance, XL is the inductive reactance, and  Xc is the capacitive reactance.
