Perspectives on Evolution of Miniaturization

Articles | 10月 17, 2012 |

Source: Medical Design Technology

As medical devices get smaller and more devices move out of the hospitals, what is the next step in this evolution?

“Today, it is often the patient, rather than a doctor, who is the user and so medical devices must be attractive as well as convenient and functional. Devices become more like any other consumer product and color and other visual elements are increasingly important. Devices also need to be safe and convenient to use outside of a controlled medical environment. This means designers need to think about things like colors to assist in product identification, gripping surfaces for ease of handling, and lubricity in moving components to make the device easier to operate. With increasing consumer concern about the environment, issues like sustainability, recyclability, compostability and source reduction become more important, but respecting the key design criteria of safety and reliability in use…more

Dramatic growth in sensor market led by magnetically actuated reed, hall devices

Articles | 9月 21, 2012 |

Source: ep&t

With the advent of new and improved technologies, sensors are expanding dramatically and are finding new requirements across many market segments – telecom, instrumentation, security, medical, automotive, home appliance, marine, consumer products, and general purpose.

Each of these market segments has unique qualities and requirements, which has further fueled the rapid growth of sensors. Magnetically actuated sensor requirements are especially in demand because more and more applications are calling for the ‘no touching’ aspect of these sensors…more

Meder Develops a Micro-Miniature Hermetically Sealed Reed Switch

Articles | 7月 17, 2012 |

Source: Medical Design Technology

Micro-machining technology, simply stated, is the utilization of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in such a way that it creates micro-mechanical systems that serve a specific purpose. MEDER’s objective was to develop a micro-miniature hermetically sealed reed switch that is able to function exactly like the larger, standard hermetically sealed reed switch…more

Portable defibrillators rely on reed relays in high-voltage charging circuit

Articles | 6月 26, 2012 |

Source: ECN Magazine

Portable automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are showing up regularly in places where large groups of people congregate, like airports and sports stadiums. This huge increase in the number of portable AEDs has not been driven by governmental regulation, but by the overwhelming evidence that they save lives…more

Growth in the Sensor Market Led by Magnetically Actuated Reed and Hall Sensors

With the advent of new and improved technologies, sensors are expanding dramatically and are finding new requirements across many market segments including telecom, instrumentation, security, medical, automotive, home appliance, marine, consumer products and general purpose. Each of these market segments has unique qualities and requirements, which has further fueled the rapid growth of sensors.  Magnetically actuated sensor requirements are especially in demand because more and more applications are calling for the ‘no touching’ aspect of these sensors.  Also, the ‘see through’ effect of magnetic fields through all non-ferromagnetic metals and plastics is clearly needed and on the rise, as this allows switching to take place where the magnetic source does not ever come in contact with the sensor.  This attribute is a key design-in requirement for many new sensing applications…more

Reed Components Expertly Handle Automatic Seat Positioning and Reclining

Articles | 3月 1, 2011 |

Source: ECN Magazine

The desired functions and features of automatic seats and recliners need components that can switch and carry the power effectively and efficiently. Reed relays are the best option for this, and are therefore an integral component of the technology in these seats.

The reed switch sensor and its sister component, the reed relay, continue to find increased use in applications taking advantage of their unique characteristics…more

These characteristics include:

• Hermetically sealed reed switch
• Ultra small packaging
• Rugged packaging
• Excellent in all tough, moist, dirty environments
• Capable of operating from -55°C to 200°C
• Best isolation of all the switching technologies: >1012 ohms
• Dielectric strength >4000 V
• Switching up to 100 W
• Switching voltages up to 1000 V
• Switching currents up to 1 A
• Carrying currents 3 A and pulsed up to 5 A
• Capable of RF switching and carrying DC up to 20 GHz

Switches: Reliable Reeds

Articles | 8月 1, 2007 |

Source: appliance DESIGN

There is elegance in simplicity, and few things are as elegantly simple as a reed switch. The technology is basic and time-tested, and has not changed much in the seven decades it’s been around. But, because of their versatility, product designers are continually finding new uses for the tiny devices. And that’s one reason why these millimeter-sized devices are sold by the hundreds of millions each year. Two other important reasons: reed switches have extremely long life compared to other electromechanical switching technologies and they don’t corrode, despite often being asked to go into harsh environments…more
